The Boom Festival's story is one of transformation. It began in 1997 as a simple party inspired by the vibrant Goa trance scene in India. A group of friends, passionate about psychedelic culture, wanted to share that experience in Portugal. Their first gathering near Águas de Moura focused on goa trance and psytrance, a far cry from the multidimensional festival it is today.
Boom's evolution went beyond just music. It embraced a spirit of artistic expression, incorporating visual arts, film, theater, and even yoga into the experience. The festival layout grew from its initial two zones - a dance floor and a chill-out space - to encompass a variety of stages and areas. The Sacred Fire stage brought the world music scene to Boom, while the Funky Beach stage and the Alchemy Circle catered to contemporary electronic music lovers. The Liminal Village offered a unique space for further exploration.
Held every two years, typically under the full moon (with a recent exception), Boom pulsates with a rhythm connected to the lunar cycle. Sustainability is a core value for the festival, with the organizers constantly striving to minimize environmental impact. Owning the land where the festival takes place allows them to implement long-term sustainable practices.
Boom has transcended its origins as a local party to become a global gathering for those who embrace alternative culture. It attracts people from all corners of the world, united by their love for psychedelic music, art, environmental consciousness, and the desire for a transformative experience.
